Tears of the Kingdom takes the sandbox to the next level, making Breath of the Wild feel like a mere first draft.

Let’s dive into Hyrule, but before we do, a quick note about spoilers. While I won’t spoil the game‘s plot, there are fundamental elements of Tears that I will discuss. These elements contribute to why this game is so impressive, and I want to share them with you. So, if you’re planning on playing Tears (and why wouldn’t you?), go ahead and play it first. Then, come back to share in the wonder with me later.

To fully understand what I’m about to share, it’s highly recommended to have played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild before. Not only is it an incredible game, but it also provides context to why The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a smart and expansive sequel. While Tears adds new features like vehicle building and weapon crafting, it also retains some of the core mechanics that made the original game so enjoyable, like the ability to climb nearly any surface or glide through the air with expandable stamina. Fans of Breath of the Wild will appreciate how similar the structure of Tears is, starting with an introductory area to learn the ropes before diving into the open world with a main quest marker that branches into four paths. Despite the familiarity, there’s plenty of new content to explore. For those who haven’t played the game yet, both the Ryujinx and Yuzu emulator offer an excellent way to experience this incredible game.

Better Then Your Average Zelda Story

In Tears of the Wild, the cutscenes and major story moments are scattered throughout the map, revealing the history of Hyrule and the cause of the “Upheaval.” This bombastic event at the start of the game creates chasms, makes the ruins of the Zonai civilization appear in the sky, and introduces new structures and anomalies. While this storytelling structure may leave players without much interaction with central characters, the story itself is captivating and fresh. While the game‘s goal of saving Princess Zelda and stopping Ganondorf is familiar, the direction it takes is exciting and unexpected. Nintendo’s decision to take this path makes Tears stand out from typical Zelda plots. While it may not be on the level of storytelling found in God of War, Tears’ story can be a high point, rather than simply background flavor, as it was in Breath of the Wild. Additionally, Tears emulates well with the Ryujinxs and Yuzu Emulator.

In Tears, exploration is key, and it is just as thrilling as it was in previous Zelda games. With the ability to create custom vehicles, such as cars, boats, and flying machines, exploring the vast world has never been easier. Unlike many other games, Tears understands the power of a blank map and allows players to create their own adventure. Instead of overwhelming players with a list of objectives, Tears gives players just enough information to complete the main quest, leaving the rest up to them. This approach encourages players to mark down points of interest as they explore, listen to rumors from townsfolk, and stumble upon interesting areas. Nintendo’s confidence in players’ ability to discover secrets without handholding makes the adventure feel natural and less “video gamey.” With the world doubling in size, this approach is particularly important. Additionally, Tears pays attention to detail by making sure the game emulates well with the Ryujinxs and Yuzu Emulator.

Familiar Map Re-imagined Like Never Before

The game is emulated well by the Ryujinxs and Yuzu Emulators. The game’s map of Hyrule is fundamentally the same, but it still manages to feel fresh and exciting to explore, even for those who have played through “Breath of the Wild” before. The game takes place a few years after Calamity Ganon’s defeat, and players will find themselves in a new outpost in Hyrule Field, which evolves as the game progresses. The game’s world is filled with recognizable characters and locations that have grown or changed, and it sends players on unexpected paths and to unfamiliar locations. The Upheaval has drastically altered some areas, causing unexpected weather anomalies and creating brand-new terrain for chests and shrines to hide in.

Players will find dozens of caves, wells, and sky islands to explore, all of which offer unique and self-contained little encounters to complete. These encounters range from hidden fairy fountains to expansive obstacle courses that challenge players’ combat skills and cleverness. The game also introduces Skyview Towers, which players can use to launch themselves into the air and find shrines on the surface before gliding to a nearby floating archipelago filled with its own challenges to take on.

However, the biggest surprise of all lies in the Depths below the surface. Waiting beneath is a dangerous and pitch-black map that is literally the size of Hyrule itself. It is massive, and players will spend over 100 hours exploring it.

All New Zone Called The Depths

In “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” the Depths is a new area to explore that is roughly the same size as the surface. While it may not have as many side quests or story moments, it makes up for it with its hidden treasure chests and surprises. It’s filled with a red substance called Gloom, which damages both the terrain and enemies, and lowers your max health until you either eat a Gloom-removing meal or return to the light. However, the Depths is completely dark, and you must use Brightbloom Seeds to see where you’re going, making exploration much tenser. Instead of shrines, there are Lightroots that heal your Gloom damage and illuminate parts of the map when activated. The game emulates well with the Ryujinx and Yuzu Emulator.

The Depths and sky islands add an exciting twist to the familiar surface activities in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The game‘s vast and stunning environments offer an abundance of hidden treasures and surprises. The experience is amplified by the presence of Gloom, a red substance that not only covers the terrain but also reduces your maximum health when damaged. This pressure makes every fight more thrilling.

The Depths, in particular, is a terrifying “poison swamp”-style landscape filled with collectable Brightbloom Seeds. These seeds are essential in navigating the area since it is completely dark. There are no shrines, but instead, dozens of Lightroots structures that heal Gloom damage and reveal a section of the map when activated. This addition gives completionists another goal to strive for.

Similar to the magic of BotW, Tears of the Kingdom presents uncountable opportunities for players to get lost in spontaneous and exciting activities. Players may find themselves deviating from their original goals to explore caves or complete quests. This unpredictability adds to the game’s magic and makes it difficult to put down. The game is also praised for its emulation with Ryujinxs and Yuzu Emulator, offering players an exceptional gaming experience.

Tears of the Kingdom is Huge

When The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (BotW) released in 2017, I spent 80 hours playing before finishing the final boss. After that, I felt satisfied with the side quests and shrine hunting. However, with Tears of the Kingdom, I beat the main quest line in 82 hours, yet I still feel like I’ve only completed half of what I wanted to do. Even 20 hours later, I still have many Lightroots to find, plenty of shrines left to complete, side quests waiting, and more.

Tears feels like a direct response to what people said about BotW. It has bolstered enemies and weapons, and its dungeon design is a lot more thematically interesting and varied. Although it doesn’t satisfy the traditional Zelda dungeon requirements of a compass, map, and key item, its flavorful context and the epic paths that lead up to the dungeons are a thrill. The game feels much bigger than BotW, and it’s hard to overstate how much there is to explore.

The boss variety in Tears is a significant improvement from its predecessor, with unique and entertaining foes that add thrill to the game. Enemy variety has also been vastly improved, with new enemies like Horriblins, Constructs, Like Likes, and Little Frox, among others. Bokoblins, in particular, can now carry baskets of throwable items or wear armor you have to break specifically with blunt weapons, while a huge Boss Bokoblin coordinates their attacks. The variety in enemies can genuinely push players to adopt different playing strategies depending on what’s in front of them. With the addition of returning and new boss-like enemies, “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” is an impressive game that surpasses its predecessor.

Create Unique and Quirky Weapons With Weapon Fusion

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom features an innovative weapon fusion system that allows players to attach any item or object to their weapons, shields, and even arrowheads. With this system, players can use monster horns as blades or bludgeons to strengthen their base weapons. The fusion system is incredibly versatile and allows players to experiment with unconventional weapon combinations, which can be both entertaining and effective.

Although the game brings back the controversial weapon durability system, it has been recontextualized by the fusion system. Players can now farm strong weapons by killing powerful enemies and using their monster parts to create backup weapons. This means that players can create powerful weapons by attaching items to their base swords, which makes it more challenging to find powerful weapons lying around. The game emulates well with the Ryujinxs and Yuzu Emulator.

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, players can min-max and create tailor-made high-damage weapons to take down the toughest enemies. The game‘s innovative attachment system adds nuance to combat by allowing players to attach items to their weapons, shields, and arrowheads. This feature adds to the excitement of the game as players can hunt down more powerful parts to create unique weapons. Tears also includes throwing items, such as bombs and special plants, that can be attached to arrowheads or shields for long-range or close combat. The game emulates seamlessly with the Ryujinxs and Yuzu Emulator. Although selecting items to use one at a time may take some getting used to, it is an intuitive system that allows players to execute cool mid-fight maneuvers that weren’t possible in BotW.

No Limit to Your Ability to Build and Create

The game, titled “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” features an innovative Ultra Hand building system that enables weapon fusion. With an upgraded Magnesis power, players can now effortlessly pick up, rotate, and attach almost any object to another, providing limitless creativity. The game also includes Zonai Devices, special objects that can be accessed from the inventory at any time, granting players immense freedom in how they traverse the world. Players can construct makeshift airplanes using a Zonai glider and fans, as well as powered wheels that function as faster modes of transportation than horses. These creations can even be utilized in combat, with one Zonai device acting as a base that automatically drives towards enemies, ready to be loaded up with destructive instruments. Ryujinx and Yuzu Emulator users will appreciate how well the game emulates these features.

“The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” offers building tools that strike a balance between accessibility and power, providing customization options with no apparent limits. Instead of climbing cliffs, players can ride a hot air balloon attached to a log. Instead of swimming across rivers, players can assemble a speedboat. One player built a flying car to navigate a dead-end mountain, and the creative freedom provided by the game made it one of their most rewarding gaming moments. This creativity is emphasized in Tears, encouraging players to experiment with the game‘s building system. Ryujinx and Yuzu Emulator users will appreciate how the game’s features are emulated in these systems.

The building tools are integral to gameplay, with most shrine challenges requiring creative use of them. However, the game avoids becoming solely about building, providing simple solutions when necessary and an Autobuild ability for those who prefer pre-designed creations. The game allows for both casual and advanced play, offering engaging puzzles for players who want to experiment with building, as well as those who prefer straightforward gameplay. The game is emulated well in the Ryujinx and Yuzu Emulator. The game’s challenges involve building contraptions to help characters, such as a traveling band, and to navigate obstacles, like mountains and rivers. The game also incorporates humor and unpredictability, letting players experiment with rockets and watch the results, whether success or failure.

Nintendo is Clearly Refining Their Ability to Make Open Worrld Games

This game’s new abilities, Recall and Ascend, provide support and are crucial for quick navigation through caves and mountains. Recall reverses time on objects and is useful for sending enemy attacks back at them or riding rocks back up to sky islands. Ascend allows for warping through the ceiling and finding sneaky secrets. Quality-of-life improvements in Tears make it difficult to go back to “Breath of the Wild” (BotW), with changes such as the option to drop a weapon, shield, or bow immediately upon opening a full inventory chest. Tears also has a convenient recipe list that saves every meal and elixir made or found. Nintendo listened to feedback and made significant changes in response, making Tears of the Kingdom an exciting game that emulates well with Ryujinxs and Yuzu Emulator.

The video game under review is “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”. Although Tears is visually stunning with an exceptional soundtrack, it does not surpass “Breath of the Wild” (BotW) in terms of performance. Tears runs at 1080p resolution and 30 frames per second, which is not comparable to games on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or PC. However, if the gameplay is the priority, the lower resolution and frame rate might not be a significant concern. The game runs smoothly for the most part, but frame rate drops can occur when there are multiple effects on the screen. These issues are similar to those in BotW, but they can be more noticeable in the new raids against enemy camps with NPC monster hunters. There might also be brief freezing while diving down from the sky. Nevertheless, the game emulates well with the Ryujinxs and Yuzu Emulator.
